One of the best things to carry in your backpack when going on hikes is a whistle. The silver, stainless steel police whistles are the best and will hold their shape better than a cheap metal one and will not rust. If a cheap metal whistle is all you can afford, it is better to have one than none.
When you think you are lost, stay in one place and blow the whistle loud and long. Other hikers will hear it and find you.
If you think you are lost, the first thing to do is to STAY PUT! Most people panic and will try to retrace their steps only to find that they are walking in circles or what is commonly called "walking blind".
Chances are greater that rescuers will find you if you stay in one location and not move around. The only exception to this tip is if you are under trees. Find a close place that is out in the open where you will be more visible to helicopter or other searchers. Once you have found a good visible place, stay there. Nothing is more frustrating than to be one step behind the lost person. Also, this prevents you from possible accidents in your panic to be found.
